NAACP Still Struggles for…

Posted by – January 17, 2011

…a continuing purpose? On the eve of Martin Luther King Jr. Day John Banks strains to justify the NAACP’s existence.

N-A-A-C-P President, John Banks explains why the holiday is important.  He says,“It’s so important that we keep the spirit alive because even as we speak we are not one nation with liberty and justice for all in this country.  So, until we get that point, we must continue to commemorate this legacy.”

Kneel before the One

Has Mr. Banks forgotten this guy so quickly? Even while Pres. Obama sits in the White House the NAACP is still required to hang this guilt around our necks.

Sound Check!!

Posted by – January 9, 2011

Today is the day that I record using my new digital recorder. Samples of both recordings are below. I thought I’d share the old way of recording the worship service and the new and improved way.

Archos 5

Archos 5 on the pulpit

Using the Archos 5 is simple but the device is limited. Sound quality is excellent if the person is standing nearby the microphone. I think I can do better.

The sound system at Christian Heights has three microphones, one for each podium and a wireless mic that the pastor wears. This adds up to much better coverage for everyone who might speak during the service.  Download both audio samples here: Archos SampleZoom Sample

Both files have been normalized and compressed in the same manner. When I listen to both files I notice that the Archos has more room noise. Mostly due to it sitting on the main podium while the man in the recording is standing at the other one. I am satisfied with how the Zoom H1 performed. Next week, I will make some adjustments and this will become the primary means of recording.

New Gadget Coming

Posted by – January 1, 2011

It’s been a year since I started recording sermons for Christian Heights. The Archos 5 has performed this function well over the past year. However, since Rev. Marion started distributing recordings of the full worship service on CD. I have been more concerned about the limits of the Archos 5 microphone. The Archos makes good recordings of a speaker standing near the pulpit but that is not sufficient to make a quality recording of the entire worship service. In June of 2010, a lightning strike short circuited several items in the church including the old sound mixer. The church bought a shiny new Yahmaha mixer with plenty of options to record the output. The new mixer got me thinking about the possibilities.

The digital recorder I ordered should be here Monday or Tuesday.

Can’t wait to plug it in next Sunday.

Christmas Parade 2010

Posted by – December 4, 2010

I didn’t take too many photos of this year’s Christmas parade. After last year’s incident, the camera stayed in my pocket most of the time except for the few times you see below.

In the video below you’ll see the Hopkinsville High Band marching past followed close behind by the JROTC students.

Creeping X-mas

christmas rush

The Reason for the Season

My Pastor at Christian Heights, Rev. Marion, preached against the commercialization of Christmas. During the first part of her sermon, Rev. Marion argues against the ‘Creeping X-mas’. The fact that Christmas decorations are put out earlier and earlier every year. I do mean ‘X-mas’ deliberately. That is Christmas without Christ. The X-mas decorations you see in department stores across the country are populated with Santas, elves, candy canes, and reindeer. If there are manger figures displayed at all The Infant is outnumbered ten to one. I’m afraid that even with reinforcements from Mary, Joseph, the Wise Men, and the shepherds Christmas couldn’t win a pitched battle against X-mas on the store shelf. Putting out cheaply made Santa figurines in September is a safe bet because Santa doesn’t stand for anything worth fighting for. If freedom… If God… If an idea is worth fighting for then someone will be offended by it.

Later Rev. Marion argues that Creeping X-mas is evidence that people are crying out for God. People are lonely and often the act of collecting more stuff is the method of running away from it. This isn’t true for corporations though. The purpose of a corporation is to make money and even better if they make a lot of money. Very rarely do the business decisions in a corporation ever have a moral dimension. Why does business run seven days a week now but didn’t years ago? Why do you think more retail businesses are staying open on Thanksgiving? The decision makers at Sears are obviously chasing the almighty dollar as fast as they can go.

Shock: The Weatherman Got it Right

snow on the hood of my car

First snow of Winter

Shock! Really! There was snow in the forecast and when I woke up this morning there was snow on the ground. Amazing!

The general rule in Kentucky is to believe the opposite of what the forecast tells you when there is the possibility of snow. Significant snow accumulation is usually nixed when temperature and moisture don’t come together simultaneously. If it’s cold enough there will not be enough precipitation or it will be too warm and it falls as rain.

Manson?

Posted by – October 26, 2010

As seen in Hopkinsville, this vanity license plate reads “MANSON”. It’s up to the reader to decide whether the driver prefers Marilyn or Charles. Either MM or CM are equally disturbing to me.

If somebody has any ideas what ‘MANSON’ could mean in a different context. I am interested, but I don’t wish to publicly out the owner.

This is a teaser video for the big Rand Paul speech to come later. The upload to youtube failed last night and I was only able to post this sweep of the crowd that came to the TEA party. Check back later!

Updated: The video of Dr. Paul’s speech is now online.
