Ham Festival 2009

Posted by – October 11, 2009

HamFest in Cadiz was noticably cooler/wetter this year than last. I was there at 10 o’clock Saturday and the Sun hadn’t yet broke through the clouds. I walked all of the booths but didn’t find anything that appealed to me.

Walking down the main drag was very entertaining though.

The Pigs of Trigg County

Posted by – October 10, 2009

Last year, when I visited the Trigg County Ham Festival I did notice the many pig statues that appear in Cadiz but didn’t focus on them. The Unusual Kentucky blog wondered where they come from. I think Cadiz has collected enough of these that there is probably a viable breeding population.

More photos of HamFest 09 still to come.

Foggy Mornings

Posted by – September 26, 2009

We haven’t had floods in the Hopkinsville area, but it has rained every day for the last week or more. When it isn’t raining, the sky stays gray. [...]

I suppose this spate of rain is an equinox storm or as it was called in older times, a “line storm”. According to Bulfinch’s Mythology, the cooler weather that’s coming after the line storm is a signal of a cool winter that will last until the next equinox.

I like the anecdotal evidence that Mrs. Netz dug up. I’m already convinced that we will have a colder, snowier winter this year. President Obama spoke a bald-faced lie when he said that shrinking islands were causing hordes of climate refugees and greater conflict around the world. Looking at the photos posted at Prairie Bluestem inspired me to go out this morning when there was thick fog to take some of my own.

All three photos were taken at an intersection on a country road in Christian County.

Soap Box Derby: Oil Can cars

Posted by – June 13, 2009

Check out the video of the crazy collision that happened at the end of the track. Several of the oil can drivers dressed up in costume. Some examples were Snoopy and Beetle Bailey making an unexpected appearance.

It was a good day all around. Can’t wait till next year!

Soap Box Derby: Stock, Super Stock, and Masters

Posted by – June 13, 2009

Had a lot of fun watching the fourth annual soap box derby. I think the rain held off long enough for all the races to finish. I left before it was completely over but it didn’t start raining till a couple hours later. The highlight of the day was definitely the oil can races. A list of the race participants can be found at hopkinsvillesoapbox.com.

The Oil Can races are still yet to come. Will be posting that shortly.

Jeffers Bend Fishing Day

Posted by – May 23, 2009

The Jeffers Bend “Take Kids Fishing” event was today. I didn’t participate in dropping bait into the water but was quite satisfied being the resident photographer. I saw many of the kids have excellent luck in catching blue gill large and small, even some non-fish creatures. The river and pond was stocked before hand with fish and one large catfish as the grand prize. WKAG has a pretty good report summarizing what TKF is about.

Little River Days 2009

Posted by – May 16, 2009

The annual Little River Days festival is this weekend. This year the city made an effort to boost the level of activity. Some years Little River Days has been very thin. The festival’s namesake is the river that runs through the center of Hopkinsville. I think this year’s festival compares favorably with previous years. There seemed to be plenty of vendors and foot traffic. Founder’s Square was packed.

I greatly enjoyed the BBQ sandwich I got from Pioneers Inc.

Veteran’s Day Parade

Posted by – November 8, 2008

The Veteran’s Day Parade was today in Hopkinsville. Readers should know that I was standing on Virginia street but the majority of the crowd was on ninth street around the corner. Just in case you wonder why the streets seem to be so deserted. Enjoy.
